What is coaching?
The coaching profession has gained popularity in the personal and professional development arena since the 1980′s because of its effectiveness!
Coaches come from all walks of life with one common desire: to help people reach their potential, succeed in the client’s desired areas of life, and enjoy life more fully. Great coaches are partners without judgement or personal agendas. They can help individuals and companies increase productivity, improve performance and relationships, and create desired results by
- Helping clients set SMART goals.
- Asking clients to do more than they would have done on their own.
- Keeping clients continuously focused to produce quicker results.
- Helping clients determine required tools, support systems and structures needed to accomplish more.
How is coaching different from consulting? Therapy? Sports coaching? A best friend?
Coaching is a form of consulting. But the coach stays with the client to help build confidence while the adapting to new skills, create better habits while making required changes, and implementing new strategies to make sure success becomes a reality.
Coaching is not therapy. Coaches don’t work on “therapy issues” or get into the client’s past behavior. They leave that up to the client to know and figure out while helping them move forward, and set personal and professional goals. If there are issues revealed which may require therapy, coaches may suggest the client work on them with his/her therapist, or recommend one to them.
Coaching includes several principles from sports coaching like teamwork, going for the goal, being your best! But unlike sports coaching, most professional coaching is not competition or win/lose based. Coaches strengthen the client’s skills to help them achieve his or her full potential rather than helping him/her beat the other team. It’s a win/win for everyone involved.
A best friend is wonderful to have. Most people consider themselves fortunate to have even one true friend. But is your best friend a professional who you will trust to objectively help you on the most important aspects of your life and/or business? You can have a best friend who focuses on your friendship and a have a professional coach who focuses on you!
